‘Thunderbolts’ Trailer: Sebastian Stan and Florence Pugh Lead a Band of Marvel Misfits
Oscar-nominated actor Sebastian Stan is returning to his MCU roots in the much-anticipated film “Thunderbolts.” The movie, set for a May 2 theatrical release, brings together a chaotic band of Marvel misfits, including Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and more.
A New Marvel Antihero Team-Up
The official synopsis describes “Thunderbolts” as an “irreverent team-up” featuring Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), a depressed assassin, alongside Marvel Cinematic Universe’s least-expected group of heroes. The film also reunites audiences with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). New faces, including Lewis Pullman and Geraldine Viswanathan, are also set to appear, replacing previous cast members Steven Yeun and Ayo Edebiri due to scheduling conflicts.
Behind the Scenes
Directed by Jake Schreier and produced by Marvel’s Kevin Feige, “Thunderbolts” boasts an impressive creative team. The script is penned by Eric Pearson (“Thor: Ragnarok,” “Black Widow”), Lee Sung Jin (“Beef”), and Joanna Calo (“The Bear”). Executive producers include Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez, and MCU veteran Scarlett Johansson.
“Thunderbolts” has been in development since its early tease in 2021’s “Black Widow” and the Disney+ series “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.” Initially slated for release in 2023, production delays pushed the premiere into 2025’s Phase 5 of the MCU.
A Chaotic Adventure Inspired by Cinema Classics
Sebastian Stan recently compared “Thunderbolts” to Milos Forman’s Oscar-winning 1975 classic, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Speaking to Variety, Stan described his character’s role in the film: “It was kind of like ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ — a guy coming into this group that was chaotic and degenerate and somehow finding a way to unite them.”
Stan has portrayed Bucky Barnes for over a decade, debuting in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Addressing the criticism often directed at Marvel films, Stan defended the franchise, stating, “It’s become really convenient to pick on [Marvel films]. But they’re a big part of what contributes to this business and allows us to have smaller movies as well. It’s just fucking hard to make a good movie over and over again.”
With a blend of action, humor, and an unconventional team dynamic, “Thunderbolts” is poised to bring a fresh and exciting new chapter to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
